WHAT TO DO IN QUARANTINE: HOMEMADE SOAP

During this pandemic we need to wash our hands so im going to be telling you guys how to make homemade hand soap.

SUPPLIES:

BAR OF SOAP

KNIFE, CHEESE GRATER, POTATO PEELER, OR FOOD PROCESSOR

WATER

ESSENTIAL OILS (optional)

SOAP COLORING (optional)

SAUCE PAN OR POT

EMPTY NON-FOOD SOAP DISPENSERS/BOTTLES

PREP AND COOK SOAP

Take a typical 4-ounce bar of soap and grate or finely chop it up by hand or food processor to make the soap flakes. For one bar of soap flakes, you’ll need to boil a half gallon (64 fluid ounces or eight cups) of water. Put the grated or chopped soap into a large bowl that will be specifically used for making the mixture.

Bring the water to a boil on the stove. Tap water is fine to use for this recipe, but distilled water is pure, which is why many soap makers prefer to use it in their recipes. You can also take it a step further and make a rain barrel to collect rainwater for extra soft soap.

Turn off the heat, pour the boiling water into the bowl of soap flakes and stir to melt using a whisk or a large spoon. Keep stirring to combine. At this point, the mixture will have a thin consistency. Allow the mixture to cool for at least 15 minutes. Then, stir it again. The mixture should be slightly thicker now.

REST THE SOAP

Cover the bowl of soap and allow it to cool for 12 to 24 hours. After the soap has rested, stir to check it for consistency. The goal is to have a bowl of congealed soap. If the mixture seems too thin, reheat it and add a bit more soap flakes. If the mixture seems too thick, reheat it and add a bit more water. The moisture content varies from one brand of bar soap to the next, so you’ll likely need to tweak the recipe to get it to your preference.

FINALIZE THE SOAP

Before pouring your soap into dispensers, you’ll have the chance to make the consistency super smooth. Run your finished liquid soap through a blender or use an immersion blender to smooth it out. Once you are satisfied with the consistency of your liquid soap, add a few drops of essential oil and/or coloring, if desired.

If you’re using a fragrant bar of soap for your recipe, you might not want to add any fragrance. If you do add fragrance, add it in sparingly so it won’t affect sensitive skin. If the soap is to be used by children, use even less essential oil in the recipe. Consider using safe, non- toxic essential oils with antibacterial properties, such as lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, or peppermint for an extra treat.

This type of DIY liquid soap stores well. From one bar of soap, you’ll probably produce enough liquid soap to fill four or more of your favorite soap dispensers. Pour your soap into labeled toiletry bottles/dispensers.

WHAT TO DO IN QUARANTINE: BOARD GAMES & MOVIES

Today im going to be talking about 2 things you can do in Quarantine with your family or by you self which this week is board games and movies.

First is Board games. Almost everyday with my family we play board games. The boards that we usually play is Uno, Connect 4, and Concentration. The object of Uno is to be the first player to get rid of all the cards in your hand each round. Cards that match the top discard in color or number can be played into the middle.

Amazon.com: UNO Card Game: Toys & Games

The object of Connect 4 is to be the first to form a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line of four of one’s own discs. Lastly the Concentration, which is also known as Match Match, Match Up, and Memory is a game where all of the cards are laid face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is turn over pairs of matching cards and whoever has the most matches at the end wins.

The shows that we watched on Tubi that are good is The Wash, Flowers, Got my Hustle up, Plug love, Next day air, and Living with no regrets. The shows that we have watched on Netflix that are good is Molly’s game, Step Brothers, The trap, Sextuplets, Scary movie 1 and 2, and Fall girls. TERIYAKI SHRIMP AND RICE

Today im going to be telling you guys how to make teriyaki shrimp and rice.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 lb. of raw medium shrimp (41/50 size)

1 small onion

1 cup frozen peas

1.5 cups of uncooked jasmine rice

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tsp of grated fresh ginger

2 cups of water

1/4 cup of soy sauce

2 Tbsp of brown sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

If your shrimp is frozen, thaw it first by placing in a colander and running cool water over it until thawed (this only takes a few minutes).

Finely dice the onion and place it in the bottom of the rice cooker along with the frozen peas (I did not thaw my peas). Add the uncooked rice, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir these ingredients together.

Add the shrimp to the top of the rice mixture, then pour in 2 cups water. Close the lid and set the cooker to the “white rice” setting. The rice cooker will begin to heat and once the contents inside reach the appropriate temperature, it will begin to count down the cooking time (12 minutes for my model).

Once the rice cooker finishes its cooking cycle, let it rest for an additional 5-10 minutes on the keep warm cycle before opening the lid. While waiting, stir together the soy sauce and brown sugar.

Finally, open the lid and pour the soy sauce mixture over the contents in the rice cooker. Use a rice paddle to gently fold the sauce into the rice. Serve hot, with sriracha or sliced green onions if desired.

SPICY BAKED BLACK BEAN NACHOS

Today im going to be telling you guys how to make loaded sheet pan nachos.

INGREDIENTS: Spicy black bean mixture

1 Tbsp of olive oil

1 small onion

10 oz can of petite diced tomatoes with green chiles

15 oz can of black beans

1/2 tsp of chipotle powder

1/2 tsp of cumin

1/4 tsp of garlic powder

1/4 tsp of salt

NACHOS:

8 oz of sturdy corn tortilla chips

4 oz of cheddar, shredded

1 Roma tomato

1 jalapeño

1/3 cup of pickled red onions

Handful of cilantro

1/4 cup of sour cream

INSTRUCTIONS:

Finely dice the onion. Add the olive oil and onion to a large skillet and sauté over medium heat until the onion is soft and transparent (about 5 minutes). Drain, but do not rinse the black beans, allowing some of the starchy liquid to remain coating the beans. Add the beans and diced tomatoes with chiles (not drained) to the skillet, along with the chipotle powder, cumin, garlic powder, and salt. Stir and simmer the mixture until it thickens and liquid no longer pools on the bottom of the skillet (about 10 minutes).

Begin preheating the oven to 350ºF. Shred the cheddar cheese, finely dice the Roma tomato, thinly slice the jalapeño, and chop the cilantro.

Line a baking sheet with parchment or foil. Spread a layer of tortilla chips over the baking sheet in a single layer, trying not to overlap the chips. Spoon about half of the black bean mixture over the chips, then sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over top. Repeat with one more layer of chips, black beans, and cheese.

Bake the chips, beans, and cheese for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the chips are just beginning to turn golden brown on the edges. Remove the nachos from the oven and add a drizzles or dollops of sour cream over top. Sprinkle the diced tomato, sliced jalapeño, pickled red onions, and chopped cilantro over top.

CARROT CAKE

Today im going to be telling you guys how to make carrot cake.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 235ml of vegetable oil, plus extra for the tin
  • 100g of natural yogurt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1½ tsp of vanilla extract
  • ½ an Orange, zested
  • 265g of self-raising flour
  • 335g of light muscovado sugar
  • 2½ tsp of ground cinnamon
  • ¼ fresh nutmeg, finely grated
  • 265g of carrots (about 3), grated
  • 100g of sultanas or raisins
  • 100g of walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped (optional)

FOR THE ICING:

  • 100g of slightly salted butter, softened
  • 300g of icing sugar
  • 100g of full-fat cream cheese

INSTRUCTIONS:

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Oil and line the base and sides of two 20cm cake tins with baking parchment. Whisk the oil, yogurt, eggs, vanilla and zest in a jug. Mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg with a good pinch of salt in a bowl. Squeeze any lumps of sugar through your fingers, shaking the bowl a few times to bring the lumps to the surface.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry, along with the carrots, raisins and half the nuts, if using. Mix well to combine, then divide between the tins. Bake for 25-30 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If any wet mixture clings to the skewer, return to the oven for 5 mins, then check again. Leave to cool in the tins.

To make the icing, beat the butter and sugar together until smooth. Add half the cream cheese and beat again, then add the rest (adding it bit by bit prevents the icing from splitting). Remove the cakes from the tins and sandwich together with half the icing. Top with the remaining icing and scatter with the remaining walnuts. Will keep in the fridge for up to five days. Best eaten at room temperature.

To check the chicken is cooked, find the thickest part and tear in half – if any part is still raw cook until done.

Put the tortillas in the oven to heat up and serve with the cooked chicken, a bag of mixed salad and one 230g tub of fresh salsa.
